Munich, August 4, 2023 - The "Smartfield" project will receive funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry for the next three years (Jan. 1, 2024-Dec. 31, 2026). Under the leadership of the Chair of Digital Agriculture at the Technical University of Munich, in cooperation with the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences, the project aims to investigate the extent to which artificial intelligence can operate autonomous crop management.
The project relies on AI models to make decisions in variety selection, fertilization and fungicide application, and to autonomously manage fields. Through a field trial with teams of professionals and students, the algorithms will be compared with human decisions to evaluate efficiency in terms of yield reliability as well as environmental sustainability and future developments. "Smartfield" opens up new possibilities for efficient and sustainable agriculture that benefits from data-driven decision models and advances the development of artificial intelligence in agriculture.
The project strengthens the TU Munich/Weihenstephan site and Bavaria as a leading location for applied artificial intelligence in agriculture.
